Welcome and let's learn English With Going English Podcast
Gi: Hey there, English learners! Welcome back to Going English, your favorite podcast where we help you sound more natural in English! I’m Gi, your host, and today’s topic is all about introducing yourself and making small talk.
Now, I was supposed to have a super chill guest today, but—plot twist—he’s crazy busy. Please welcome… Mark!
Mark: Hey, Gi! Hey, everyone listening! Yes, I am swamped! I mean, I barely had time to breathe today!
Gi:Swamped? Okay, English learners, let’s pause. If someone says “I’m swamped,” it means they are very busy, like a swamp full of alligators and no way out. Mark, are you literally in a swamp right now?
Mark: [laughs] No, but it feels like it! So much work, so little time!
Gi: Alright, before you run off to your million meetings, let’s practice a basic introduction. Mark, how do you introduce yourself to someone new?
Mark: Well, I’d start with: “Hi, I’m Mark! Nice to meet you!” and I’d shake hands. Oh wait, do people still shake hands?
Gi: Hmm… sometimes. But if you’re feeling casual, you can just say, “Hey, I’m Mark!”
Mark: Right! And if I want to be super friendly, I could say: “Hi, I’m Mark. It’s great to meet you!” or even “Hey there! I’m Mark!”
Gi: Perfect! And what if you want to tell someone a little about yourself?
Mark: Well, I’d say: “I’m from New York, and I work in marketing.” Or, “I live in London, and I’m a student.” Simple!
Gi: Nice! But let’s make it more interesting. What if you want to sound fun and not like a robot?
Mark: Ooooh, okay! I could say: “I’m Mark. I’m originally from New York, but now I live in London. I work in marketing, but I’d rather be on vacation.”
Gi: Hahaha, I love that! And English learners, did you hear “originally”? That means where you were born or where you’re from before moving somewhere else.
Mark: Exactly! And, if someone asks, “What do you do?”, that’s just a short way of saying “What is your job?”
Gi: Good point! You can answer with “I’m a…” plus your job. Like, “I’m a teacher.”
Mark: Or “I’m an engineer.” And if you don’t want to talk about work, just say “I work in…” plus your field. Like, “I work in education.”
Gi: And what if you’re unemployed?
Mark: You could say, “I’m between jobs.” It sounds so much nicer than “I don’t have a job.”
Gi: Exactly! And what if you’re super busy, like you?
Mark: Then you say, “I’m drowning in work!”
Gi: Whoa, Mark! Do we need to send a lifeguard to save you?
Mark: Probably! But before I dive into my work zone, what challenge do we have for our listeners?
Gi: Ooooh, great question! English learners, tell us about your daily routine in the comments! You can write something like:
“I wake up at 7 AM, go to work, and relax in the evening.”
“I study English every morning and drink 10 cups of coffee.”
Mark: That sounds like me!
Gi: And don’t forget to follow Going English for more videos, lessons, and fun English activities!
